Larry Millete was sentenced Monday to 25 years to life in state prison after being convicted of first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Maya Millete, who vanished from their Chula Vista home in January 2021, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

During the sentencing hearing, the couple’s two teenage daughters spoke publicly for the first time, expressing that they missed their mother and still loved their father but urged him to reveal the location of Maya’s body to provide closure.

Millete addressed the court and family members, stating he was not a monster and regretted not protecting his wife, but he did not admit guilt or take responsibility for her death, which led to an emotional reaction from Maya’s family in the courtroom.

Superior Court Judge Enrique Camarena said the sentence was influenced by Millete’s denial and defiance, his callousness after Maya’s disappearance, and his lack of genuine remorse or efforts to find her, describing his conduct as abhorrent.

Millete’s defense attorneys requested the judge to reconsider the sentence, but the judge emphasized the absence of humility or acceptance of responsibility in Millete’s actions.
