Maryland man charged in Silver Spring teen's fatal shooting
A 20-year-old man faces murder charges after a 13-year-old Silver Spring girl was fatally shot.
Prince George's County police have charged a 20-year-old man in the shooting death of 13-year-old Any Davalos from Silver Spring, WTOP reported. The shooting occurred just before 2 a.m. outside an apartment complex on 15th Avenue.
Police arrested Marcos Melendez-Umanzor, who lives near the shooting location in Hyattsville, within an hour of obtaining an arrest warrant, according to Police Chief George Nader. The chief said the three individuals knew each other and that the shooting likely stemmed from an argument, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Davalos had been reported missing by Montgomery County police on October 18. County Executive Aisha Braveboy expressed sorrow for the loss and emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
Chief Nader addressed questions about possible gang involvement or connections to other recent killings, stating that no clear links have been established but investigations are ongoing.
This incident adds to a recent increase in violence in Prince George's County, with seven people killed in the past week, WTOP noted.
