NC State fires football coach Dave Doeren after 14 seasons
NC State has parted ways with head football coach Dave Doeren and named Todd Goebbel interim coach for the rest of the season.
NC State University announced Saturday evening that it has fired head football coach Dave Doeren, ending his 14-year tenure with the Wolfpack football program, WRAL reported. The dismissal came less than 24 hours after a 31-28 loss at Stanford dropped the team to a 3-4 record this season.
According to WRAL, Doeren was the school's all-time leader in wins with a 98-74 record. The season started with hopes for a 10-win campaign and an appearance in the ACC title game, but the team's performance declined, leading to the decision to relieve Doeren of his duties.
NC State's director of athletics, Boo Corrigan, expressed appreciation for Doeren's leadership and contributions during his time at the university, as reported by ABC11 WTVD. Corrigan also wished Doeren and his family well in the future.
Todd Goebbel, the running backs coach and special teams coordinator who has been with the Wolfpack since 2019, was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season, according to ABC11 WTVD. The university said a national search for the next head football coach will begin immediately.
