NFL reviews medical care of Eagles QB Jalen Hurts after injury vs. Rams
NFL and NFLPA jointly investigate handling of Jalen Hurts' blood clot diagnosis following injury in game against Los Angeles Rams.
The NFL and NFL Players Association are jointly reviewing the medical care Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts received for blood clots, according to delcotimes.com, dailylocal.com, and readingeagle.com. This investigation follows a call from the NFLPA earlier this week for a full inquiry into how the diagnosis was handled.
Hurts was placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss the remainder of the season after a blood clot in his left calf traveled to his lungs. The Eagles and Hurts' agent reported he has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. His treatment includes blood thinners, and he is prohibited from football activities until treatment ends.
The injury occurred during a game on October 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, when Hurts took a cleat to his calf. He informed medical staff after practice on October 8 and was back at practice the following day before traveling with the team to London for a game against Jacksonville.
Specialists in London initially diagnosed Hurts with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis, but he played in the October 11 game. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that protocols were followed and defended the medical staff, while welcoming the ongoing investigation.
The NFLPA emphasized the importance of determining facts to ensure players receive the highest level of care and protection in the future. The joint review by the league and players' union aims to clarify the handling of Hurts' diagnosis and treatment.
