One arrested after fire at Hitler's Eagle Nest mountain retreat
A fire engulfed the historic Eagle's Nest site in Germany; one person is in custody as investigation continues.
German police reported a fire at Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat, known as Eagle's Nest or Kehlsteinhaus, located on the peak of Obersalzberg.
The fire began around 9:15 p.m. local time on Friday, and firefighters found the building completely engulfed in flames upon arrival, though no injuries were reported.
Firefighting efforts were hindered by difficult local conditions, complicating access to the site, police said.
Authorities detained one suspect shortly after the fire started, and the cause of the fire is under criminal investigation, according to Upper Bavaria South police.
The Eagle's Nest, completed in 1938 at an elevation of 6,017 feet, was occasionally used by Hitler as a temporary government seat and survived World War II bombings largely intact.
The site has since become a tourist attraction featuring a restaurant and beer garden, noted on its website as a rare undamaged monument from the Nazi era representing the regime's insanity.
