Oregon father stops school shooter, ending deadly rampage at elementary school
Kaylub Giamanco intervened during a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary, stopping a gunman who killed three students and a teacher.
Kaylub Giamanco, a father of two and carpenter from Bend, Oregon, stopped a school shooter at Silver Rail Elementary School on October 15, according to ABC News and PBS NewsHour. The gunman, a 16-year-old, had entered the school and killed three students and a teacher before Giamanco intervened.
Giamanco was driving home when he saw the armed individual jump over the school fence. He then retrieved his own gun and entered the school after hearing gunfire and children pleading for their lives, as reported by ABC News and PBS NewsHour.
Inside the school, Giamanco saw a teacher struggling with the gunman and took action to stop the attacker, ending the deadly rampage, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting and NPR National.
Giamanco expressed regret that he was not able to save all the children, saying he felt like the last line of defense for the students, as reported by PBS NewsHour.
During the incident, Giamanco also called 911 but felt frustrated by the dispatch protocol, explaining he had to act quickly to prevent further loss of life, according to PBS NewsHour.
