Orlando’s Church Street undergoes construction for downtown revival
City works to revitalize Church Street with new lanes and pedestrian walkways, aiming to restore its nightlife appeal by 2028.
Orlando’s Church Street is currently experiencing construction as part of a city initiative to revitalize the downtown entertainment district, WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando reported. Visitors have noted a decline in the area's energy compared to its past vibrancy as a nightlife hub.
The city began the first phase of the Church Street roadway improvements project over the summer, focusing on the stretch from Garland Street to the railroad tracks. The plan includes two 11-foot travel lanes and pedestrian walkways designed to foster a festival-like atmosphere, according to WKMG.
Despite construction occupying much of the roadway, signs of progress are visible, such as new landscaping in the street's center. A local resident noted improvements since her last visit, expressing hope that the area will regain its lively character.
Following the first phase, the city will move to the second phase along Orange Avenue, which aims to enhance pedestrian-friendliness. The overall project is expected to be completed by summer 2028, with the goal of restoring Church Street as a popular destination for nightlife and entertainment.
The revitalization effort reflects the city's commitment to bringing back the atmosphere that once attracted crowds to Church Street, including opportunities for younger generations to enjoy the area as a social and entertainment hub.
