Pentagon’s top military planner fired amid Trump’s Iran strike considerations
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removes Joint Chiefs’ top strategist as Trump weighs new Iran military actions.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the Pentagon’s top military planner, Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, according to an Associated Press report via WTOP. Sylvia was the head of strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a key role responsible for coordinating military plans with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the president.
Sylvia is the second general to be removed from this position under Hegseth, following Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee’s forced retirement last October. No immediate replacement for Sylvia has been named, and no official reason for the firing has been provided, according to a defense official who spoke anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the personnel matter.
The timing of Sylvia’s removal coincides with former President Trump’s repeated suggestions of initiating new military operations against Iran. Trump has expressed intent to "finish the job" in Iran following the conflict involving Israel and has indicated new strikes could occur after the upcoming midterm elections.
U.S. officials have warned Middle Eastern countries and regional allies to prepare for possible renewed military action and potential Iranian retaliation after the elections. A third U.S. aircraft carrier and thousands of additional troops are reportedly en route to the region, signaling heightened military readiness.
Sylvia previously commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and served as vice director for the J5 before his current role. His official biography has been removed from public access following his dismissal.
