The Petersburg Police Department has installed new Flock security cameras across the city, including Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) and Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, WTVR CBS 6 reported.

ALPR cameras, which capture vehicle and license plate information, have been used in Petersburg before and assist law enforcement with public safety purposes, according to Police Chief Colonel Travel C. Christian.

The newly added PTZ cameras can move and zoom, providing officers with better situational awareness to respond more effectively to crimes and enhance public safety.

Chief Christian emphasized that the cameras are intended as public safety tools, not for unnecessary monitoring of residents’ everyday activities, aiming to protect neighborhoods, businesses, visitors, and officers.

CBS 6 News is inviting community feedback on the camera installations to ensure diverse voices are heard on this topic affecting Petersburg.
