PLNU men’s basketball coach Justin Downer builds winning tradition despite challenges
Coach Justin Downer has led Point Loma Nazarene men’s basketball to multiple titles amid personal and team hardships.
Point Loma Nazarene University men’s basketball coach Justin Downer has established a strong winning tradition in his fourth season, leading the Sea Lions to three consecutive PacWest regular-season championships and back-to-back conference tournament titles, according to the Times of San Diego.
Despite significant turnover and injuries, Downer has guided the team to back-to-back NCAA Division II West Regional championship games. However, both seasons ended in losses, with Downer facing personal challenges during these times.
In 2025, Downer had to rush his son to the emergency room after a household accident. The following year, Downer himself was hospitalized after suffering a stomach virus on the day of the West Regional championship game, which affected his ability to coach during the contest.
Downer spent two days in the hospital after nearly blacking out during the game and was not cleared to fly home immediately. He described the offseason as difficult, reflecting on a season that ended in a game he could hardly remember.
Looking ahead, the Sea Lions aim to build on their recent success under Downer’s leadership as they continue to compete in the PacWest conference and NCAA tournaments.
The team and coach remain committed to overcoming setbacks and pursuing further achievements in upcoming seasons.
