Proposition 37 aims to make homeownership more affordable in Los Angeles and across California by reducing downpayment requirements.

Bob Hertzberg, a proponent of Proposition 37, outlined the measure's goal to unlock homeownership for middle-class families in California, including those in Los Angeles County, according to sgvtribune.com and whittierdailynews.com.

The proposition would allow qualified buyers to purchase a new home with just a 3% downpayment, significantly less than the traditional 20% requirement, which currently demands around $176,000 in Los Angeles County.

This change could reduce the time needed for families with median incomes to save for a downpayment from over twenty years to less than five years, making homeownership more attainable for nurses, teachers, veterans, and small business owners.

Proposition 37 also aims to spur new home construction across the state without costing taxpayers, using a state revenue bond rather than a general obligation bond, which proponents say is a financially sound approach.

Despite some editorial opposition, Hertzberg emphasized that the proposition offers a straightforward solution to California's housing affordability crisis by increasing access to homeownership and housing supply.
