A retired Anne Arundel County police officer successfully fought off a home intruder in his Morrell Park residence, The Baltimore Banner reported. The 59-year-old officer was resting in bed when his wife, who had just returned from an evening out, noticed their dog acting erratically and discovered the intruder at the bottom of the stairs.

The intruder was motionless and crouched when first seen. The retired officer tried to get the man to show his hands, but when he refused, the officer used a hammer to strike him repeatedly during a scuffle that moved through the house and onto the front porch.

The officer called out for help, which attracted neighbors who rushed over. One man helped by untangling the hammer from the struggle, allowing the officer to gain control. Meanwhile, the officer's wife called 911 during the incident.
