San Leandro family faces thefts of $700 in Halloween decorations
A San Leandro family's 20-year Halloween haunted house tradition hit by thefts of animatronics worth $700.
A San Leandro family that has transformed their home into a free community haunted house for 20 years has experienced thefts of Halloween decorations, CBS News Bay Area reported. Two animatronic props were recently stolen from their lawn, with a total estimated loss of about $700.
The family said many of their props are discontinued and difficult to replace. Last year, another decoration was stolen in the early morning hours and captured on video, involving a mannequin taken by someone driving a pickup truck onto the lawn.
Since the thefts, the family has increased security and started an online fundraiser, which has raised over $1,400 to buy new props. They emphasized the importance of preserving the tradition by asking visitors to observe and touch but not take decorations.
Despite the setbacks, the family plans to continue their haunted house this year, with about 15 people involved including extended family and school friends. They do not charge admission and offer a full walkthrough to anyone interested.
The family expressed disappointment over the thefts but remain committed to providing a community event, calling it a labor of love and hoping the stolen items bring joy elsewhere.
