SCC holds public hearing on Dominion Energy, NextEra merger in Richmond
Richmond residents and groups voice support and opposition at State Corporation Commission hearing on utility merger.
The State Corporation Commission (SCC) in Richmond held a public hearing Thursday on the proposed merger between Dominion Energy and Florida-based NextEra Energy, drawing a line of people and protesters outside the venue, NBC12 reported.
Inside, the SCC commissioners heard from numerous individuals expressing both support and opposition to the merger. Opponents raised concerns about rising utility rates and costs, including for vulnerable groups like the elderly, according to WWBT.
Supporters of the merger emphasized the economic benefits and the importance of expanding energy capacity for Virginia's future economy. The companies have agreed to 101 of 117 proposed conditions and safeguards to address financial and operational concerns, according to filings and statements from the companies. The Virginia FREE Executive Director noted the merging entities took advice from SCC staff and adjusted their filings accordingly.
Written public comments on the merger are accepted until November 12. An evidentiary hearing is scheduled to begin November 17, with a final decision expected around January 11, according to NBC12.
