SCDNR investigates bird deaths in Charleston area linked to suspected bird flu
South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is testing dead birds amid a die-off of Canada geese and ducks in Charleston and Mount Pleasant.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is investigating a series of bird deaths in Charleston and Mount Pleasant, including North Charleston's Quarterman Pond, according to Live 5 WCSC.
Officials suspect the die-off involving Canada geese and ducks may be linked to avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, but testing is ongoing to confirm the cause.
Avian influenza naturally occurs in wild bird populations across North America and can increase during seasonal migration, the department noted, but the specific cause of this die-off has not yet been confirmed.
SCDNR is advising the public to avoid handling sick or dead wild birds and to keep pets away from potentially affected birds. The department will continue monitoring the situation as more information becomes available.
