Second World War veterans outnumbered former prime ministers at the national service of remembrance held at the Cenotaph in central London, The Guardian reported.

The event featured about twelve veterans from the conflict, including Jeffrey Brereton, who served in the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain.

Jeffrey Brereton volunteered for the RAF in 1940 at age 19 and worked as a mechanic on Hurricane aircraft.

The service also included participation by Andy Burnham alongside eight former prime ministers, marking his first time at the ceremony.

This may be the last occasion where Second World War veterans outnumber former prime ministers at the event due to the dwindling number of surviving veterans.
