The Jefferson City News Tribune reported that gardeners are experiencing a significant increase in hydrangea varieties, described as a 'wonderful tsunami' of new shrubs.

According to the Tribune, the Proven Winners 2021 Hydrangea of the Year was the Tuff Stuff Ah-Ha, a mountain hydrangea that grows about 36 inches tall and wide with large blue lace cap flowers.

The article highlights that the number of hydrangea varieties has grown substantially, with Proven Winners alone listing 66 varieties in their catalog, not counting other producers.

The Tribune also noted that the Tuff Stuff Ah-Ha hydrangea pairs well with other plants like Shadowland hostas, creating picturesque garden combinations.

Another variety mentioned is the Invincibelle Wee White II smooth hydrangea, debuting next year, which has a compact 30-inch size and blooms that start white and age to soft green.

The article reflects on how hydrangea options have expanded greatly since the 1990s, offering gardeners many new choices beyond the limited selections available decades ago.
