Shannon Taylor wins Virginia's 1st Congressional District, flipping seat blue
Henrico County's Shannon Taylor declared victory over incumbent Rob Wittman in Virginia's 1st District race.
Democrat Shannon Taylor, who served as Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney for 14 years, declared victory in the race for Virginia's 1st Congressional District, according to WTVR CBS 6. The district covers parts of Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover, James City, York, Gloucester, and New Kent counties.
Taylor's win unseats Republican incumbent Rob Wittman, who has represented the district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2007, WRIC 8News reported. Taylor described her victory as flipping the district blue.
The race was closely watched, with Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger speaking at Taylor's election watch party in Henrico County while the results remained tight, WRIC 8News also noted.
The Associated Press has not yet made an official projection on the race, and WTVR CBS 6 indicated this is a developing story with updates to follow.
