Measure J holds slim lead in Palo Alto for Cubberley redevelopment
A 0.5% sales tax measure to fund Cubberley Community Center redevelopment is narrowly ahead in early Palo Alto election results.
Early results from Election Day show that Measure J, a tax proposal aimed at redeveloping a 15-acre section of the Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto, holds a slim lead, according to Palo Alto Online.
The measure would impose a 0.5% sales tax, expected to generate $15.6 million annually for the city. Funds would be used to purchase 7 acres of the Cubberley site from the school district for $65.5 million and to initiate a redevelopment project.
The first phase of the redevelopment is projected to cost between $300 million and $400 million. The community center is described as dilapidated but beloved, indicating local interest in its renewal.
Campaign leaders expressed confidence in the measure, though the contest remains too close to call as votes continue to be counted.
The outcome will determine the city's ability to move forward with significant redevelopment efforts at the Cubberley site, impacting local community resources and infrastructure.
