Game 6 of the WNBA Finals took place at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time on October 29, 2026, prompting Golden State Valkyries fans in San Francisco to find creative ways to watch the game during work hours, Mission Local reported.

Fans were initially upset about the early start time but quickly adapted by calling in sick to work or school to catch the game, with some even using doctor’s notes, according to Mission Local.

This phenomenon was dubbed the 'Valkyries illness,' characterized by fans wearing purple attire, developing scratchy vocal cords from cheering, and showing strong appreciation for women's sports, Mission Local noted.

Local bars such as Mother in the Mission District and Hi Tops in the Castro became gathering spots for fans to watch the game over espresso martinis and breakfast.

Despite the enthusiasm, the Golden State Valkyries did not clinch the championship in Game 6. The decisive Game 7 is scheduled for October 31 at 5 p.m. at Ballhalla, with hopes that fans will recover from their 'illness' by then, Mission Local said.
