Charles Taylor, a Republican candidate for North Carolina House District 51 and a Sanford city councilman, has filed a lawsuit against the Sandhills Citizens Alliance, WRAL reported. Taylor claims the group distributed political mailers falsely stating he owns an illegal gambling operation and is running a casino in Lee County.

The Sandhills Citizens Alliance also maintains a website with similar allegations, including that Taylor has benefited from hundreds of thousands of dollars in dark money from groups seeking to expand gambling in North Carolina, according to WRAL.

Taylor acknowledges owning the property in Sanford where the gambling business operates but denies involvement in the business or its daily operations, asserting he is only the landlord, WRAL noted.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Lee County Superior Court and challenges the political group's claims as false, according to WRAL. The case is ongoing, and further developments are expected as the legal process continues.
