Officers shoot driver after vehicle rams patrol car in northwest Atlanta

Atlanta police officers shot and killed a driver Thursday afternoon in northwest Atlanta after the vehicle rammed a patrol cruiser, according to FOX 5 Atlanta and Atlanta News First. Officers had responded to the 1100 block of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW to serve an arrest warrant related to domestic violence and aggravated assault.

According to Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Prenzinna Spann, officers spotted the wanted suspect outside an apartment complex. The suspect and another person entered a vehicle and attempted to flee. The driver of the vehicle immediately began ramming the patrol car, prompting officers to open fire and shoot the driver, who later died from injuries.

FOX 5 Atlanta and Atlanta News First reported the driver who was shot was not the suspect wanted on the original warrant. The wanted suspect remains at large and has not been identified. Police have not released the identity or age of the deceased driver.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, following standard protocol. Police have stated there is no immediate threat to the public at this time. The incident caused a section of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard to be shut down during the investigation.

Community members were advised to avoid the area while officers responded. Atlanta News First noted an SUV was seen pinned between a patrol car and a fence at the scene.
