Montgomery and Prince George’s schools show gains in Maryland report card
Maryland’s 2026 school report card shows more schools earning higher ratings, with strong gains in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
The Maryland State Department of Education released the 2026 school report card showing improvements across the state, with half of public schools earning four- or five-star ratings, up from 43% last year, WTOP reported.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) saw 67% of its rated schools achieve four- or five-star ratings, including 36 schools with the highest five-star rating, the most in Maryland, according to MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor.
MCPS also reported progress beyond overall ratings, noting improvements among multilingual learners and students with disabilities in language arts and math at many schools.
Prince George’s County Public Schools reported that 84% of its rated schools earned three stars or higher, with 37 schools increasing their ratings and a reduction in two-star schools from 45 to 30, Superintendent Shawn Joseph said.
Statewide, nearly 89% of public schools earned three stars or higher, reflecting steady progress in academic achievement, academic progress, and graduation rates, Maryland State Superintendent Carey Wright said.
The report card results come as Maryland officials work to redesign the school accountability system to emphasize student growth more heavily.
