10-year-old girl abducted from Oregon apartment found safe, suspect in custody

Violet Hay was found safe over 12 hours after being abducted; a suspect was arrested following a police investigation.

Police in Canby, Oregon, responded early Wednesday morning to a reported kidnapping at an apartment complex, according to the Canby Police Department.

Authorities said a 10-year-old girl, Violet Hay, was abducted by force around 1:39 a.m. after an unknown male entered the apartment and assaulted her 12-year-old sister.

The 12-year-old sister was hospitalized and is receiving treatment, Canby Police Capt. James Murphy stated during a press briefing.

Violet Hay was located safe at a residence in Oregon City at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, more than 12 hours after the abduction, and a suspect was taken into custody following a SWAT team operation.

Canby Police Chief Jose Gonzalez expressed relief at finding the girl safe and noted the investigation remains active as officials seek more information about the circumstances surrounding the case.
