Hayden Panettiere's death ruled accidental from drug overdose in South Carolina
South Carolina police have closed the investigation into actor Hayden Panettiere's death, ruling it accidental due to multiple drugs including fentanyl.
South Carolina police announced the investigation into actor Hayden Panettiere's death has concluded, ruling it accidental based on the medical examiner's findings, NBC News and CBS News reported.
Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive on August 16 in a Greenville apartment where she was staying. Emergency responders pronounced her dead despite advanced life support measures, according to the Greenville County Coroner's Office.
The coroner determined her death was caused by toxic effects of multiple drugs including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. No signs of trauma or foul play were found during the investigation, as noted by police and the coroner's office.
Panettiere had publicly discussed struggles with addiction and had been in rehab weeks before her death. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend was present at the apartment and provided police with a bag of medication she was taking.
Following the coroner's report, Panettiere's mother described her as a fighter who was transparent about her addictions and rehab attempts.
Authorities including the Drug Enforcement Administration had investigated the circumstances, but no suspicious activity was found, leading to the closure of the case.
