At least seven cities in California's Bay Area have enacted moratoriums on new data centres, despite the region's status as a hub for artificial intelligence, Al Jazeera reported.

Protesters in Oakland recently demonstrated against new data centres, expressing concerns that these facilities could strain the local energy grid and increase electricity bills for residents. An environmental activist highlighted that rising power prices have led some residents to consider shutting off their power, while the city plans to supply electricity to data centres.

Data centres require continuous power and significant water for cooling, and they emit heat that can raise local land surface temperatures by up to 16 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Al Jazeera. The rapid expansion of data centres has raised environmental and financial concerns across the United States, with over 3,000 centres currently operating and more than 1,500 in development, the report noted.

The Bay Area is home to major AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta, which rely on data centres to power AI services. The growth of this industry has been linked to a local economic revival, but the environmental impact has prompted increasing opposition.

The debate over data centre development highlights a tension between technological growth and environmental sustainability in a key US tech region.
