Chula Vista City Council voted unanimously to review its tenant protection ordinance after a brawl on October 14 led to six arrests and one person hospitalized with stab wounds, according to Voice of San Diego.

The city's tenant protection rules, adopted in 2022, were designed to shield renters from unfair evictions, especially no-fault evictions related to property sales or renovations. These protections go beyond state law and were the first of their kind in San Diego County.

Councilmembers expressed concern that the current regulations might unintentionally allow criminals or squatters to exploit legal loopholes, causing disturbances in rental units and delaying eviction processes.

Councilmember Michael Inzunza, who initiated the review, emphasized the need to maintain protections for law-abiding tenants while strengthening measures against serious nuisance activity, threats, and criminal conduct in rental properties.

The city attorney has been tasked with exploring potential amendments to enhance the ordinance’s effectiveness in addressing dangerous residential situations, reflecting a broader challenge faced across California, as noted by Inzunza.
