Daly City woman shares 39-year breast cancer journey to inspire others
A three-time breast cancer survivor from Daly City raises awareness and supports research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
CBS News Bay Area reported on a Daly City woman who has survived breast cancer three times over 39 years and is now dedicating her efforts to helping others. She initially discovered a lump that led to her first diagnosis, followed by recurrences nine and twenty years later.
Her lifelong nursing career, spanning from 1971 to 2012, has influenced her commitment to health and community support. After retiring, she began volunteering with the American Cancer Society, which provided significant support during her treatment.
She participates as a Rich to Recovery volunteer, raising awareness, connecting with breast cancer patients, and assisting with fundraising for cancer research. The American Cancer Society emphasizes that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, highlighting the importance of ongoing awareness.
The organization also hosts annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks to unite the community and encourage regular screenings beyond October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to reduce diagnoses and improve lives.
CBS News Bay Area noted the survivor's hope that more people will engage in these activities to support those affected by breast cancer and contribute to research efforts.
