Davis driver ticketed for honking during ICE operation, city reviews incident
A driver was cited for using their horn during a federal immigration enforcement action in Davis, prompting a city review.
The Davis Police Department issued a ticket to a driver for honking their car horn during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Davis on Thursday morning, FOX40 reported.
The incident occurred near Cowell Boulevard and Lillard Drive, where ICE agents were detaining a local landscaper. An observer honked their horn to alert the community, leading to the police stop and citation for 'unlawful use of horn,' according to NorCal Resist spokesperson Giselle Garcia.
California law prohibits using a car horn unless it is to ensure safe operation of a vehicle. Garcia argued the honking was a public safety measure during what she described as a warrantless detainment based on racial profiling, a concern raised by local advocacy groups.
The Davis city spokesperson confirmed an administrative review of the incident is underway, emphasizing the importance of maintaining community trust. FOX40 reached out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for comment, but no response was received by the time of reporting.
