Davis toad tunnel featured on Comedy Central's The Daily Show
Davis' unique toad tunnel gained national attention with a segment on Comedy Central's satirical news program.
The Davis toad tunnel, a $13,000, 220-foot-long project designed to help frogs and toads safely migrate to their Core Pond habitat, was recently featured on Comedy Central's The Daily Show, according to the Davis Enterprise.
The tunnel, installed in 1996 beneath the Pole Line Road overcrossing, aims to prevent amphibians from being crushed by cars. Its eastern end includes 'Toad Hollow,' a whimsical area with a hotel, brew pub, swimming pool, and outhouse, created by Davis postmaster Ted Puntillo.
The Daily Show segment was prompted by a Forbes magazine article on toad tunnels, leading producers to send correspondent Steven Colbert and producer Richard Korson to Davis. City Councilwoman Julie Partansky and Enterprise columnist Bob Dunning were interviewed for the piece.
Comedy Central's publicist Steven Albani noted the show looks for humorous and offbeat stories, and the toad tunnel fits that description. The half-hour mock newscast airs Monday through Thursday at 11 p.m., hosted by comedian Craig Kilborn.
The segment explored whether Davis toads have used the tunnel since its installation, highlighting the local community's imaginative approach to wildlife conservation.
This media attention continues to spotlight Davis' innovative environmental efforts, bringing national awareness to local initiatives.
