El Cerrito High suspends football program amid hazing probe
El Cerrito High School's football program is suspended due to a hazing investigation involving multiple alleged crimes.
CBS News Bay Area reported that the boys football program at El Cerrito High School has been suspended following a hazing investigation. The El Cerrito Police Department received a report on October 2 from a mandated reporter alleging bullying and hazing among team members.
The investigation, which included interviews and video evidence, found incidents occurring between September 2024 and last month. Allegations include battery, sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, dissuading a victim, stalking, and conspiracy, according to police.
Authorities have identified 22 individuals suspected of involvement, all current or former students at El Cerrito High School. The police anticipate multiple arrests as the investigation continues.
The West Contra Costa Unified School District announced the suspension of the football program to prevent further harm and restore a safe environment. The football head coach was placed on leave, and a separate Title IX investigation is being conducted by an independent third party.
