An explosion and fire occurred Monday, Oct. 26, in the North Carolina mountains, prompting an investigation by the state's Alcohol Law Enforcement Division (ALE), WBTV reported.

Upon arrival, ALE agents found an active illegal distillery inside a metal building, which was charred from the explosion. The agents seized approximately 1,800 gallons of mash and 161 gallons of illegal moonshine.

A 69-year-old man was arrested in connection with the operation and charged with related offenses, according to WBTV.

Moonshine has historical significance in North Carolina, once serving as an important income source for rural residents. The practice influenced local culture and entertainment, including the TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” and the roots of many early NASCAR stars.
