Frederick and Harford County executives win reelection amid data center debates
Jessica Fitzwater and Bob Cassilly secure second terms as county executives with differing data center policies.
Jessica Fitzwater won a second term as Frederick County executive, securing about 55.3% of the vote and maintaining a 10,000 vote lead over her Republican challenger, according to WYPR. Key election issues included data centers, immigration, and affordability, with Fitzwater and other Democrats winning most county seats including council and sheriff positions.
Fitzwater supports a 2,600-acre data center overlay zone north of Adamstown intended to limit data center sprawl, a policy that faced opposition and a failed referendum earlier this year. Some supporters expressed cautious optimism for her continued leadership and desire for more oversight on data center development.
In contrast, Harford County voters reelected Republican Bob Cassilly as county executive, as reported by FOX45 Baltimore. Cassilly’s administration notably enacted legislation banning data centers in Harford County, making it the first Maryland county to do so.
Cassilly’s priorities include low taxes, government efficiency, public safety, education funding, farmland preservation, and economic development focused on high-tech manufacturing and local business support. His tenure has seen increased public safety funding and expanded EMS coverage.
These election results highlight contrasting approaches to data center development in neighboring Maryland counties, reflecting local priorities and concerns about growth and land use.
