Montgomery County's Will Jawando outlines priorities as new county executive
Will Jawando plans to focus on education, affordable housing, and a new police chief as he begins his term.
Will Jawando, recently elected as Montgomery County executive, shared his priorities as he prepares to take office, The Baltimore Banner reported. Jawando, a Democrat and longtime at-large County Council member, defeated Republican Esther Wells in the deep-blue Montgomery County race.
At an election watch party, Jawando emphasized his commitment to ensuring great schools, safe neighborhoods, dignified retirements, and livable wages for all residents. He told The Banner that his first priority is assembling a "really smart" executive team, including appointing a new police chief to replace former Chief Marc Yamada, who resigned after a critical inspector general report.
Jawando also plans to propose the county’s next budget amid a growing deficit, prioritizing education, affordable housing, and protections for seniors. He has previously supported increased funding for Montgomery County Public Schools despite tensions over declining enrollment.
Regarding data center development, which has been a contentious issue, Jawando supported an 18-month moratorium earlier this year and intends to introduce changes to county tax policies affecting data centers. Community leaders, such as D. Reed of Greater Greater Washington, have urged careful consideration of this sector's growth.
As Jawando assumes leadership, his agenda reflects a focus on key community concerns and fiscal challenges facing Montgomery County.
What we're watching: How Jawando’s administration will balance budget constraints with his priorities on education, housing, and public safety.
