GBI investigates after officer fires at fleeing driver near Athens

A traffic stop in Winterville led to a police chase ending in a crash and an officer firing a shot.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is reviewing an incident where an officer fired at a fleeing driver during a traffic stop outside Athens, Atlanta News First reported.

The encounter began on Oakmont Court in Winterville when police stopped a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Derrell Dukes. Dukes then drove away, prompting an officer to fire at the vehicle as it fled.

The chase continued into Madison County, where Dukes crashed the vehicle. Both Dukes and a passenger were hospitalized for injuries from the crash.

After being released from the hospital, Dukes was booked into Clarke County Jail on charges related to outstanding warrants, according to the GBI.
