Halloween candy prices rise 78% since 2020 in Washington DC area
Candy prices have surged sharply, with a 100-piece bag costing nearly $17 this year, impacting local shoppers.
Halloween candy prices have increased significantly, rising 78% between 2020 and 2025, according to Finance Buzz, as reported by 7News in Washington, D.C. This increase is more than three times the general inflation rate over the same period.
A 100-piece bag of Halloween candy now costs $16.96, marking a 3.5% rise from last year and a 71% jump compared to 2021. Popular items like a six-pack of Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars have doubled in price compared to six years ago.
Costs for key ingredients such as sugar, corn syrup, and cocoa have all increased. Despite wholesale cocoa prices dropping by 70%, the supply is expected to be about 16% lower this year, leading to a roughly 7% price increase for chocolate, according to financial strategist Bill Dendy.
Transportation and packaging costs have also risen, contributing to overall candy price hikes. Prices for hard candy and gummies have gone up about 5%, while chocolate prices have increased between 11 and 12%.
Package sizes can be misleading, as they appear similar but contain less candy. InvestorsObserver found that the same candy budget now buys 40% less candy than in 2020.
Despite these price increases, consumers are expected to spend $13.5 billion on Halloween-related items this year, nearly 4% more than last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Shoppers are advised to look for sales, use coupons, and consider giving non-food items like stickers as alternatives.
