The Charlotte Hornets, together with two real estate companies, have purchased the former EpiCentre site in uptown Charlotte, now called Queen City Quarter, WFAE reported. The site was once a popular nightlife destination but faced challenges including crime perceptions and vacancies.

Tony Mecia of The Charlotte Ledger explained that after its initial popularity, the EpiCentre declined as people moved to other areas like South End. The property experienced financial difficulties leading to its sale.

While the new owners have not detailed specific plans, they aim to restore the site’s vibrancy and make it a destination again. One partner involved has prior experience with the EpiCentre.

The Hornets’ involvement reflects a trend of sports teams seeking to control land around their arenas. Similar moves include the Carolina Panthers’ development of a music venue near Bank of America Stadium. The Hornets appear to have broader ambitions beyond basketball games at the Spectrum Center.
