Jet fuel prices rise, prompting airlines to shift toward premium offerings

Rising jet fuel costs and fluctuating air traffic are driving airlines to redesign services and focus on premium passengers.

Jet fuel prices continue to rise in 2026, impacting various factors in air travel such as aircraft supply, air traffic volume, and input costs, Skift reported.

Passenger demand and airline revenues appear stable at a macro level, but the economics are changing due to rising fuel costs and scarce aircraft availability, according to Skift.

Airlines are responding by shifting toward premium offerings, redesigning cabins, loyalty programs, networks, and customer experiences to maintain revenue, Skift noted.

This move toward premium services is now seen as a baseline strategy for revenue rather than a temporary measure, as described by Skift Research.

The challenge for airlines lies in deciding how much of the increased fuel costs to absorb versus passing on to passengers, with variations depending on market pricing power and traveler sensitivity, Skift explained.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had forecasted the airline industry’s net profit to halve in 2026 before jet fuel prices surged above $200 per barrel, Skift added.
