L.A.'s next mayor faces homelessness, infrastructure, and Olympics challenges
The incoming Los Angeles mayor must tackle homelessness, public safety, and city budget issues amid preparations for the 2028 Olympics.
The next mayor of Los Angeles will confront numerous pressing issues including widespread homelessness, deteriorating infrastructure, and a strained city budget, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Homeless encampments are prevalent across the city, affordable housing remains scarce, and many roads are damaged by potholes. Additionally, tens of thousands of streetlights are nonfunctional, and residents face rising water and power bills.
A recent poll by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies found that likely L.A. voters prioritize reducing homeless encampments, improving public safety, and increasing affordable housing. Protecting immigrant communities and balancing the budget are also key concerns.
Experts note that the mayor’s powers may be limited given the complexity of city governance. Tom Hogen-Esch, a political science professor at Cal State Northridge, described the city’s problems as “wicked” and difficult to solve, with frustrations persisting for decades.
Beyond these ongoing issues, the mayor will also oversee recovery efforts after recent firestorms in Pacific Palisades and support the local film industry while preparing Los Angeles to host the 2028 Olympic Games.
