A Lauderhill police officer resigned following his arrest on multiple charges related to taking over a deceased man's home, city officials reported. Brian Sguros stepped down from the force before termination proceedings could be finalized, according to CBS News Miami.

The investigation began after a complaint was filed on May 27 regarding Sguros' conduct involving residential property in Lauderhill. An internal affairs probe was launched the same day, with collaboration from the Broward County Property Appraiser's Office and Crimes Against Property Unit.

Sguros was placed on paid administrative leave in July during the ongoing criminal investigation. He was arrested on October 20 and charged with official misconduct, criminal use of a deceased person's identification, and other offenses. Following his arrest, his leave status was changed to unpaid.

Authorities said Sguros allegedly took possession of the home after discovering the deceased man during a welfare check and forged documents to claim the property. He pled not guilty to the charges, WSVN 7News reported.

Lauderhill Police Chief Constance Stanley emphasized the importance of public trust and integrity within the department. City Manager Kennie Hobbs Jr. also highlighted that maintaining community confidence in law enforcement is essential for the city.

The case remains under investigation, and the city has pledged to uphold high standards of conduct among its officers.
