Maryland senators seek $311M for nonprofits amid transparency concerns
Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen request earmarks for nonprofits, raising questions about accountability.
Maryland's Democratic U.S. senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen are requesting approximately $311 million in earmarked funds for nonprofit organizations, FOX45 Baltimore reported.
This request has sparked concerns about transparency and accountability, according to investigative journalist Jeremy Portnoy of Open the Books, a government spending watchdog. Portnoy noted that nonprofits often lack financial order and may engage in partisan advocacy, which is not intended in earmark spending.
Portnoy also highlighted that earmark funds are frequently distributed based on political influence rather than actual need, sometimes serving to appeal to special interest groups and potentially sway votes.
Spotlight on Maryland has reported on several nonprofits that failed to comply with state regulations, including being behind on federal tax filings and having leaders with tax liens. One report revealed that city leadership did not conduct background checks on a nonprofit leader with a criminal record and bankruptcies before allocating taxpayer funding.
Sheila Weinberg, founder and CEO of Truth in Accounting, emphasized the risks associated with government funding to nonprofits, underscoring the need for careful oversight.
