Miami-Dade elections chief won't recuse herself in tight District 27 recount
Democratic candidate questions Miami-Dade elections chief's impartiality amid close congressional race recount.
As Florida's District 27 congressional race enters an automatic recount, Democratic candidate Eliott Rodriguez has called for Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections Chief Alina Garcia to recuse herself from overseeing the process, WSVN reported.
Rodriguez's campaign raised concerns about Garcia's impartiality after she reportedly declared the Republican incumbent, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, the winner on election night, stating to the Miami Herald, "María Elvira [Salazar] is the winner, with or without a recount."
The campaign also alleged a conflict of interest, claiming that Garcia's son-in-law, Robert Fernandez, is representing Salazar in the recount. However, officials did not confirm this relationship or provide further details.
Despite the allegations, the office of the Supervisor of Elections confirmed that Garcia will remain in charge of the recount process. Salazar responded to Rodriguez's claims by accusing him of undermining public confidence and insisting her vote lead is "an insurmountable margin."
