Flower Power nonprofit brightens South Florida senior homes with recycled bouquets
A South Florida nonprofit repurposes old flower bouquets to bring joy to seniors and involves special needs participants in the process.
A South Florida nonprofit named Flower Power is transforming old bouquets into colorful flower arrangements for senior residents, WSVN 7News reported. The organization delivers these flowers to places like the Atlantic Shore Retirement Residence in Fort Lauderdale, spreading happiness among seniors.
The idea originated when founder Shayna Schon delivered bouquets to a struggling friend and realized flowers could be a simple way to show love and care. To make the effort sustainable, Flower Power partners with local florists and grocery stores to collect flowers that would otherwise be discarded.
Initially a small family effort, Flower Power expanded by collaborating with the Foundation for Independent Living, a special needs program seeking meaningful activities for its participants. The partnership allows participants to learn flower arranging while helping prepare bouquets for delivery.
Every Friday, participants sort through stems and create unique bouquets, combining creativity and social interaction. This collaboration not only increases the nonprofit's capacity to spread smiles but also provides impactful engagement for those involved, according to WSVN 7News.
Flower Power’s work directly benefits the South Florida community by reducing waste and bringing joy to senior residents, with ongoing deliveries planned to continue brightening local senior homes.
