Cuban journalist Yoani Sánchez detained in Havana, third arrested this week
Yoani Sánchez, founder of 14ymedio, was taken by police while walking to a store in Havana, highlighting risks for independent journalists.
Yoani Sánchez, an award-winning Cuban journalist and founder of the independent news outlet 14ymedio, was detained by authorities in Havana on Thursday, CBS News Miami reported. Sánchez informed her staff via text that police took her into custody while she was walking to a store, describing the incident as a kidnapping.
This arrest marks the third independent journalist detained in Havana this week. Earlier, journalists Camila Acosta and Adelth Bonne Gamboa were handcuffed and released after several hours, according to the Miami Herald.
Miami resident Hermes Soto called Sánchez's detention a grave mistake and emphasized the importance of respecting free expression. Cuban activist Orlando Gutiérrez highlighted the systemic dangers for independent journalists in Cuba, noting that all media must belong to the state under the current regime.
Gutiérrez explained that the crackdown aims to suppress information to conceal government failures and human rights violations. He suggested that international pressure, including from the European Union, might influence Sánchez's detention and urged stronger advocacy against the Cuban government's actions.
It remains unclear when Sánchez will be released. The arrests underscore ongoing tensions between independent media and the Cuban government, with activists calling for increased global attention to the situation.
