NASA seeks commercial help to extend Hubble Space Telescope's life
NASA is inviting private sector proposals to boost Hubble's orbit and prevent its fall in the 2030s.
NASA has announced it is seeking innovative and cost-effective solutions from the commercial space industry to extend the operational life of the Hubble Space Telescope. The telescope is gradually losing altitude due to Earth's gravity and is expected to re-enter the atmosphere and crash sometime in the early to mid-2030s without intervention, The Verge reported.
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the importance of exploring all reasonable opportunities to keep Hubble functioning, noting that the telescope still has significant scientific contributions to make. Extending its life could lead to new discoveries and further our understanding of the universe.
The agency has opened a Request for Information (RFI) to gather proposals from private companies capable of boosting Hubble's orbit. This RFI will remain open until November 30th at 3 PM ET, according to The Verge.
