NC State fires defensive coordinator DJ Eliot after defensive struggles
NC State dismissed defensive coordinator DJ Eliot following poor defensive performance and head coach firing.
NC State University announced the firing of defensive coordinator DJ Eliot, less than two full seasons after his hiring, WRAL reported. This move came a day after the dismissal of head football coach Dave Doeren, marking a significant coaching shake-up for the Wolfpack.
The decision followed ongoing defensive difficulties, especially against the pass. WRAL noted that through the first six games of the 2026 season, NC State ranked 104th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 27.7 points per game. In 2025, the defense allowed 411.9 yards per game, ranking 109th nationally, with particular struggles against the pass, surrendering 273.2 passing yards per game.
The recent loss to Stanford, which scored 31 points against NC State despite averaging just 18.3 points per game and ranking 127th nationally in scoring offense, highlighted these issues. Stanford built leads of 14-0 and 28-14 and never trailed in that game, according to WRAL.
Following Eliot's departure, Charlton Warren, the co-defensive coordinator and safeties/nickels coach, will take over defensive play-calling duties for the remainder of the season, ABC11 WTVD and CBS17 reported. Zac Roper will continue coaching running backs and coordinating special teams.
This coaching change comes amid broader staff adjustments, including the firing of football general manager Andy Vaughn, as reported by ABC11 WTVD. Interim head coach Todd Goebbel is expected to hold his first media briefing soon, according to the station.
