The North Charleston Community Center, in partnership with the North Charleston Police Department, will host a grocery giveaway Wednesday starting at 1 p.m. at 3947 Whipper Barony Lane, according to Live 5 WCSC.

The giveaway aims to support residents in the southern part of North Charleston, an area identified as a food desert, meaning it has limited access to affordable fresh food. Organizers expect to distribute between $20,000 and $30,000 worth of groceries.

Louis Smith, executive director of the Community Resource Center, said the event is one of the center’s largest grocery giveaways to date. Organizers expect around 1,500 people plus 300 to 400 students to attend, according to Live 5 WCSC.

Smith noted an increase in people seeking assistance, including elderly residents, people with disabilities, and those lacking transportation. He emphasized the importance of the giveaway in helping residents uplift themselves amid rising living costs.

The Community Resource Center plans to continue weekly food distributions as long as there is community need, supported by donations from various companies, Smith added.
