The open enrollment period for health insurance plans begins November 1 for households using state-based marketplaces and HealthCare.gov, FOX 5 DC reported. This includes residents in the Washington DC area who purchase coverage through these platforms.

Mychal Winter, president of the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals, advised that reviewing healthcare expenditures from the past year can help households anticipate future needs when choosing a plan. He emphasized the importance of consulting insurance professionals to navigate the complex options.

Winter also noted that health insurance premiums are generally expected to rise this year, so households should compare last year's premiums with potential increases when evaluating plans.

The open enrollment period overlaps with Medicare's separate enrollment window and many employer-sponsored insurance plans' enrollment periods, which typically occur in October and November, according to FOX 5 DC.
