Petersburg has officially renamed part of High Pearl Street near Virginia Avenue as Moses Malone Boulevard to honor the city's basketball icon, NBC12 reported.

Moses Malone led Petersburg High School to consecutive state championships and a 50-game winning streak in the 1970s before earning three NBA MVP awards and a league title, according to WWBT.

In addition to the street renaming, the city renamed Dorsey Flats, an affordable senior housing community, as Malone Flats to further commemorate Malone's legacy.

Malone's son said his father frequently spoke about Petersburg and expressed his love for the city, calling the renaming a very special moment.

These changes recognize Malone's impact both locally and nationally and celebrate his contributions to Petersburg's community and sports history.
