Photographer captures 250 veterans’ portraits to honor service
Mikel Conrad’s project highlights veterans’ stories to preserve their legacy for the country’s 250th birthday.
Photographer Mikel Conrad has created the “250 Faces of Service & Sacrifice” project to honor veterans by capturing their portraits and stories. The project aims to ensure the experiences of those who served are remembered long after they are gone, as reported by NBC12, Live 5 WCSC, WBTV, and Atlanta News First.
One veteran featured is Ron Camillo, who served in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division and the 5th Marines. He shared memories of his service from 1950-51, including difficult experiences he chooses not to discuss, according to NBC12.
Conrad emphasized the veterans’ humility and dedication, noting they did what was necessary without seeking recognition. His goal is to create a portfolio for the country’s 250th birthday that preserves these stories for future generations, as Live 5 WCSC and WBTV reported.
Aging Untold host and gerontologist Sam Cradduck explained that the portraits do more than show faces; they provide veterans with recognition and respect, helping them feel seen and honored. This approach reduces apprehension about being photographed, focusing on honoring rather than vanity, according to NBC12 and Live 5 WCSC.
Veteran Gene Acker reflected on the shared bond among those who served, saying, “We’re all tied together. We’re all brothers.” The project serves as a tribute to the men and women who have shaped the country’s history through their service, as noted by WBTV.
